How to choose a replacement VFD
Matching a drive is not only about horsepower. Check these before ordering:
- Part number first. The exact code on the nameplate is the safest match. Search it in our catalog.
- Supply voltage and phase, for example 240 V single-phase versus 380 to 480 V three-phase.
- Output current in amps, not just kW or HP. Two drives with the same rating can differ in current.
- Enclosure rating, panel-mounted IP20 versus washdown or outdoor-rated units.
- Communication protocol, such as EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, PROFIBUS, Modbus or DeviceNet, so the drive still talks to the existing PLC.
- Options and I/O cards, including built-in filters, brake choppers and keypads. Suffixes in the part number usually indicate them.

What is the difference between a VFD and a servo drive?
A VFD controls the speed of a standard AC induction motor with open-loop or light closed-loop control. A servo drive controls position, speed and torque of a servo motor with closed-loop feedback and far higher precision. Use a VFD for pumps, fans and conveyors; use a servo drive for indexing, positioning and synchronized motion.
Can I replace a discontinued VFD with a newer model?
Often yes, but the mounting footprint, control wiring and communication card may differ, which means panel and program changes. Replacing with the same discontinued part number keeps the line running with no retrofit. We stock obsolete drives for exactly that reason.
